Saskatoon 5, Notre Dame 1

A pair of 5-on-3 power plays in the second period . . . that’s where momentum shifted in Friday’s Battle of Saskatchewan between the Saskatoon Contacts and the Notre Dame Hounds.

The Hounds didn’t score on their two-man advantage and then the Saskatoon Contacts did.

That power-play goal by Quinton Ong, at 9:15 of the middle frame, proved to be the game-winner as the Contacts (2-0-0) punched their ticket to Sunday’s Telus Cup West final where they’ll have a chance to qualify for the Telus Cup national championship.

Ty Gitzel, Ty Prefontaine, Tyler Heidt and Justin Ball also scored for Saskatoon. The latter two tallies were empty-netters.

Adam Dawe scored the lone goal for the Hounds (0-2-0) who went into the intermission tied 1-1 despite being outshot 15-1 at one point in the opening frame.

Isaac LaBelle continued his strong play for the host team, stopping 29 of 30 shots. Reid Cooper made 25 saves for Notre Dame.

The round robin wraps up Saturday with Kenora (0-1-1) playing Notre Dame (0-2-0), followed by Winnipeg (1-0-1) and Saskatoon (2-0-0).

The top two teams qualify for Sunday’s final (2 p.m., Rod Hamm Arena) where they’ll compete for a berth to the national Telus Cup scheduled for Quispamsis, NB, later this month.
